Is a microchip a GPS tracker?

Nope! A microchip has no battery and cannot track your pet’s location. It contains only a unique identification number. When a scanner detects the chip, it reads that number. The number can then be entered into a microchip registry lookup to identify the registry where your pet’s information is stored.

My pet has a collar and tags. Do they still need a chip?

Yes — think of it as backup that can't fall off. Tags and collars are great, right up until they slip, which tends to happen at the worst possible moment. A chip stays put.

What do I do if I move?

Accepted Answer

Update your registration with the microchip company the moment your address or number changes — an out-of-date chip can't bring your pet home. Registering and keeping it current is the owner's job, but if you're not sure where to start, we'll point you the right way.
